How to Reground Before You Plan
A Gentle Guide for Finishing the Year Softly
The end of the year can feel like a pressure cooker. Everywhere you look there are lists, bold promises and “reset” challenges that sound like competitions. If you don’t have a planner with you or if 2025 looked different than you expected, all that noise can feel like more than you want. That’s why the first step in any meaningful planning is not a to-do list. It’s a gentle return: a re-grounding.
Regrounding is simple: it’s creating a small, repeatable ritual that says to your body and mind, “I am here. I can choose from calm.” It’s not about grand gestures. It’s about three tiny moves that change the way you approach the rest of your year and your next year. Over the next week, we’ll focus on those tiny moves. We’ll practice them together so that when you do start planning, you plan from a kinder, clearer place.
This post will walk you through why re-grounding matters, the simple rituals you can adopt in under 10 minutes a day and a practical exercise to carry one feeling through the week. By the end, you’ll have a repeatable routine and habits that returns you to center.
Why grounding matters before planning
Planning without grounding is like building a house on shifting sand. You can sketch a beautiful future, but if your day-to-day foundation is frazzled, your plans are less likely to survive the real world. Grounding does three key things:

Calms the nervous system. When you consciously slow your breath and attention, your sympathetic nervous system (fight-or-flight) softens. This makes decision-making less reactive and more considered.

Clarifies priorities. A calmer baseline helps you hear what actually matters, rather than what feels urgent. When you’re grounded, “important” and “urgent” stop being synonyms.

Creates permission. Grounding is a tangible permission slip: permission to be gentle, to choose less, to carry one feeling instead of trying to “fix” everything at once.
If you’ve had a season where plans didn’t land... a missed launch, a baby, a changed routine, grounding gives you a non-shaming reset. It tells your brain you’re not starting over with failure; you’re starting again with care.
Three micro-rituals to reframe your week
(each 5–10 minutes)
Below are three practical rituals you can use any day this week. Each takes 5–10 minutes. Do one a day, or all three in a row... whatever your energy allows.
Ritual 1 — The Three-Breath Reset (2–3 minutes)

Sit or stand comfortably. Place one hand on your belly. Inhale for 4 counts, hold 2, exhale for 6. Repeat three times.

Why it works: deliberate breathing reduces cortisol and brings attention back to the present. It’s the fastest way to interrupt overwhelm.
How to use it: When a decision feels heavy or before checking your calendar, pause and do the Three-Breath Reset.
Ritual 2 — One-Word Intention (1–2 minutes to choose, then visibility)

Choose one word (not a sentence) to carry for the week: calm, steady, gentle, finish, soft.

Write it on your phone wallpaper, a sticky note or the printable we made. Repeat it silently when you need a soft anchor.
Why one word? It’s simpler than a list. Words condense meaning and shape what you notice. Carrying one word nudges your actions to align with a tone rather than a rigid goal.
Ritual 3 — The Five-Minute Reset (5–10 minutes)

Pick one small physical reset: clear one surface (desk or bedside), clear one group of notifications, toss 3 things from your to-do list or step outside for a short walk.

Why it works: small actions change your environment and signal to your brain that you’re creating space. When your space is clearer, your mind follows.
Combine them: Start with the Three-Breath Reset, say your One-Word Intention, then do the Five-Minute Reset.
The short exercise: choose and carry one feeling
This week’s practical exercise is short and intentionally simple: pick one feeling to carry and use it as your compass.
Step 1: Choose. Spend a minute choosing a single word. Don’t overthink. If you hear three words you like, pick the one that feels easiest to breathe. Put it where you’ll see it.
Step 2: Anchor. Each morning, say the word aloud and take one long breath. Each time you make a small decision, what to prioritize, what to remove ask: “Does this align with [your word]?” It’s not about perfect alignment. It’s about offering your decisions a filter.
Step 3: Reflect. At the end of the week, journal for five minutes (you find this in the free downloadable): Which moments felt aligned with your word? Where did you lose it? What did you learn?
Why this works: Choosing a feeling reduces the tyranny of multiple goals. It gives your week a tone instead of a to-do list. If your word is gentle, it’s easier to say no without guilt. If it’s steady, it invites small, consistent steps instead of dramatic changes.
How to make this stick without pressure
This isn’t a productivity sprint. Use these practices as invitations. A few practical tips to keep it gentle:
